One explanation given as: William was indentured to an Uncle in Illinois and ran away. A reward for his return was issued but he managed to avoid capture and began using Wallace instead of Worley.

William served in the Union Army, 21st Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers , Infantry
1st Corporal of the Color Guard, Company C

He served a total of four years, 1861-1865 and was held prisoner at Andersonville.

which outlines his service during the war
